Every since mankind lived in caves most people have believed in one way or another that their fate was guided by some type of supernatural beings. Realistically they have generally been known through various mythologies in one form or another. Whether they were real or not is really just a side issue. People always approached them with great caution whether discussing or represented them. In some areas of the planet they are still known as the gentle folk to appease them.

They were generally thought to be servants of mother nature. In the distant past people needed plentiful rains with lots of sunlight for any crops to flourish. It was critical for them to think they had some real control over their short lives and this depended on them having good crops and being able to hunt down animals around the forest.

There is no secret that people in the past lived very hard lives and generally died young. The greater mythology about faeries is their incredibly long lifespans. They were also fond of dancing and singing and felt very conflicting emotions. These are all attributes that people historically wanted and they embodied them in the magical beings they saw.
