Florida - Fun Facts About The Sunshine State

By Jony Mozen

The number one reason for vacationing in Florida is to sit on the beautiful beaches, bask in the sun and frolic in the warm waters of the Sunshine State. Travel Holiday magazine voted Delray Beach as one of the top public beaches in the southeastern United States for swimming and one of the top 35 beaches in the entire country overall. Sand quality, safe waves, and water warmed by Gulf Stream currents were cited as factors contributing to their choice of Delray Municipal Beach.

Jumping around the list you'll find that the Florida Panther is the most endangered of all Florida's symbols Florida Panther are large, long-tailed, pale brown cats that grow up to six feet for females and weigh up to 100 pounds, while the males can grow up to seven feet long and weigh up to 160 pounds. Its habitat is usually where there are white-tailed deer, which is the mainstay of its diet. Human population growth has been the primary threat to the panther's range and continues to diminish the quality of existing habitats. The Manatee, also called a sea cow, is a gray, waterplant-eating, gentle giant that reaches eight to 14 feet in length and can weigh more than a ton. Manatees are on the endangered species list, and their survival depends on controlling human activity, such as being struck by boats and barges. Also, the propeller blades of speeding boats can cut a manatee's hide to ribbons. Regulations have limited the speed of boats in waters populated by manatees during winter months, when more than 1,500 of the creatures swim to warm bays and rivers to avoid pneumonia and death.

The Alligator originally symbolized Florida's extensive untamed wilderness and swamps. Alligators are found throughout Florida and prefer lakes, swamps, canals, and wetland regions. Alligators eat fish, turtles, and a variety of other animals. In late June and early July, female alligators usually lay thirty to fifty eggs in mound-shaped nests made of reeds and other vegetation. Baby alligators hatch after an incubation period of about two months. When hatched, alligators are already fully developed and about eight inches long. Mature male alligators average between six to twelve feet in length, with females may grow to nine feet. Alligators are cold-blooded reptiles so they often sun themselves on banks near water. Gators can move surprisingly fast over short distances, and their powerful jaws and swinging tails make them dangerous to approach. The Porpoise or Dolphin may be hard to tell apart, but in Florida both names refer to the Bottlenose dolphin, the species commonly found along Florida's Atlantic and Gulf coasts. (Porpoises are a different saltwater mammal and are not commonly found in Florida waters.) Dolphins are gray with a lighter underside and most are six- to eight-feet in length. Dolphins use echolocation, much like sonar, to determine their orientation. Many live to the age of thirty.

When you look at the topography of Florida you will see that it is a large plateau that barely rises above sea level. The highest point in the state is believed to be 345 ft (105 m) near the city of Lakewood, in Walton County. The lowest point is at sea level at the Atlantic Ocean. Almost all the southeastern peninsula and the entire southern end are covered by the Everglades, the world's largest sawgrass swamp, with an area of approximately 5,000 sq mi (13,000 sq km). The Everglades is actually a huge river that flows south-southwest from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay. No point in the Everglades is more than 7 ft (2 m) above sea level. Its surface is largely submerged during the rainy season, April to November, and becomes a muddy expanse in the dry months. Slight elevations, known as hammocks, support clumps of cypress and the only remaining stand of mahogany in the continental United States.

The Orange Blossom is one of the most fragrant flowers in Florida. Millions of these white flowers add sweet perfume to the air throughout central and south Florida during orange blossom time. Orange Juice became most popular during the Second World War when scientists invented a process for making concentrated orange juice. When a frozen concentrate was developed it transformed orange juice production into a multi-billion-dollar industry. The State Wildflower is the Coreopsis and are used extensively in Florida's roadside plantings and highway beautification programs. The coreopsis is found in a variety of colors, ranging from golden to pink. The Sabal Palm is the most widely distributed palm in Florida. It grows in almost any soil and besides its landscaping beauty it is used in medicine and food. Agatized Coral. Coral is the exoskeleton of tiny ocean animals called polyps, which live in colonies attached to hard underwater surfaces. While alive, polyps combine their own carbon dioxide with the lime in warm seawater to form a limestone-like hard surface, or coral. Agatized coral occurs when silica in the ocean water hardens, replacing the lime-coral with a form of quartz known as chalcedony. The 20-30 million year process replaces one mineral with another without losing its original form. Agatized coral is found in three main Florida locations: Tampa Bay, the Econfina River, and the Withlacoochee/Suwannee river beds. Moonstone. When United States astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ("Buzz") Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, aboard the Apollo 11 spacecraft the Florida legislature honored them by adopting the moonstone as the official state gem, because all astronaut-controlled spaceflights were launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Brevard County
