Blowing Out Transitioning or Natural Hair

By Olivia X. Pierce

Just like using a flat iron, blowing out transitioning or fully natural hair is a style you might want to try occasionally to have a certain look or to switch up your style.

Generally, its best to steer clear of using heat products on your hair as much as possible. Nevertheless, if you use the proper technique and products, you can infrequent blow drying without incurring too much damage.

On occasion it helps to blow out your hair in advance of doing a twist out style to get a bigger and more sleek look and also to help it dry more quickly.

With this technique you get a sleeker and sometimes longer lasting style. Doing a blow out before doing these styles also helps your hair to dry more quickly. If you blow dry before doing a braid or twist out style you have to change the products that you use to make sure that you don't re-hydrate your hair excessively and cause it to "go back" after the blow dry.

Selecting the Best Blow Dryer: For natural or transitioning hair, it is important that you use a blow dryer that comes with a comb attachment. This makes it much easier to get through thick hair. It also helps with technique in that you don't need to use a comb or brush in one hand while holding the blow dryer in the other hand. So in buying a blow dryer, you must first eliminate all kinds that do not accommodate an attachment.

After you reject the blow dryers that don't come with an attachment comb there are not that many choices left. Basic brands include Yellow Bird, Con Air, Tourmaline Tools and Hot Tools. Get a ceramic ionic blow dryer.

Which Products to Use: During the blow drying process, you should only use heat protectant. This is because if you use conditioner or moisturizer, it will take your hair longer to try. Conditioners and moisturizers add moisture to your hair, this will only be additional moisture that you are trying to get back out as you are blow drying. After your hair is dry, however, put in gloss or shine serum, an oil based moisturizer, and hair oil.

The Method: For the quickest drying and to curtail the possibility of breaking hair, it is a good idea to section your hair into 12 sections then dry from tip to root applying heat through each section of hair until it is completely dry.

If you go from root to tip you will just pull your hair out because it causes too much tension on the hair. Also, wait to put on any products, especially any sealants or oils, until you are done drying each section. If you put the oil on before the section is dry, it takes much longer to dry because the strands are already coated with the moisture "sealed in".
